Unless you live under a rock, you will know that water is the best thing you can give back to your body. Drinking at least 2 litres of water a day will give you more energy, better mental clarity, make you feel better physically, help you loose weight, improve your mood, make it easier to make decisions, make it easier to concentrate, stop you feeling hungry all the time, clear impurities out of your body aaaaaand its 0 calories!
Drinking water is the most important thing to do when it comes to looking after yourself and having a healthy lifestyle. So what’s stopping you?
Well, a few things actually. I love water, but even I get really bored of it at times and am tempted to reach out for a diet coke, which has the same amount of calories as water, but 10000x more apparently cancer causing crap and basically no nutritional value. A lot of drinks companies might try and suck you in with phrases like “less calories, same great taste”, “diet”, “zero”, “no added colourings or flavourings” or “made with real fruit juice” but this doesn’t mean these drinks are good for you, in fact the more fancily presented they are, the worse for you they probably turn out to be.
That doesn’t mean you have to stop having the occasional delicious drink though. I’ve got some healthy, low calorie, low fuss ideas for making your water extra delicious.
Might seem obvious, but tea is a great way to simply change the flavour of water, and also comes in at no calories. To make your tea as healthy as possible, don’t add any sugar or sweeteners and try some caffeine-free herbal and fruit teas which often have wonderful nutritional benefits. Keep a selection of different flavoured teas in your cupboard for when you need help getting that glass of water in your tummy.
Fruit and vegetable infusions
These seem to be all the rage at the moment. All you have to do is get a plastic or glass water bottle with an opening to push chunks of fruit and veg through and fill it almost to the top with fresh water. Then cut up some cucumber, strawberries or simply put some berries and mint into the water and store in the fridge over night for delicious flavoured water without all the chemicals of flavoured water from shops. There are loads of different recipes available online for different flavour combinations.
This recipe for flavoured water is soooo delicious. All you have to do is get a couple of handfuls of frozen berries, a glass of water and a tsp or two of sugar into a blender and whizz until all of the berries have broken down into mush. My Nutri Ninja does this really well. Then simply strain the mixture over a jug, making sure all of the liquid has gone through and the berry mush remains. Just pour the fruity water into a glass or bottle and you’ve got a simple, healthy and delicious fruity drink just like magic.
Forget fruit squash or fruit flavoured soft drinks, good old fruit juice is the way to go if you want to add something quickly and easily to liven up your water. Either put a dash of pure fruit juice into your water or make ice cubes out of juice that will not only cool your drink but add some lovely fruity flavour.
